FAQ Global Gateway

About Gateway

What is Global Gateway? Global Gateway is a program for incoming freshmen. Students spend the first semester of their freshman year at Mason and their second semester abroad.
How much does it cost? Costs are the same as one semester at Mason. Students pay regular in-state or out-of-state tuition. See Finances and Scholarship for details.
Are foreign language skills required? No, but it doesn't hurt. All of our courses on the Gateway program are taught in English and the course reading materials are also in English. Placement tests will be given by both Mason and the on-site host institution
Where can I find more information? You can find more information on each location oOn our website, in the Global Global Gazette (bit.ly/GGgazette) written by Global Gateway participants, in our FAQ video session with Gateway alumni, and our Instagram @masonglobalgateway.

Can I change Gateway locations? In some cases, you may change locations depending on space availability. Changes must be made in writing to Global Gateway and you will need to provide reason(s) for the desired change. Not all Gateway locations are compatible with all academic needs. The Global Gateway Team will work with you for the best suited location.
How do I apply? Those selected receive an invitation in the Mason Admissions Portal. Apply following the instructions in the portal.
When is the application deadline? The priority deadline is June 15, but students are encouraged to apply throughout the summer.

Studying and Living Abroad

What is housing like? Housing varies by location. See Housing and Meal Plans for details.
What is the meal plan like? Meal plans vary by location. See Housing and Meal Plans for details.
Can I work while I study abroad? No. Study or student visa restrictions apply, which do not permit students to work.
