FAQ Global Internships

FAQ

What is available? Partner Programs:
You can find your own internship or be placed in a guaranteed partner internship. We have partner travel, virtual, and hybrid (virtual + travel) opportunities during the Summer and Semester. Build Your Own Internships are for Summer, Semester, Spring Break, or Winter Break. Check out available career fields and locations and internship company examples.
Is this full-time or part-time? Both options are available depending on the program.
Do I take courses while I intern? Yes, you take online asynchronous Mason courses. The default credits are tied to the hours worked and the class you take. Request alternate credits from your department using an Academic Credit Request form in your application.
Am I eligible? Program specific requirements are listed on each application page. Most internships are in English. International students are eligible. Non-Mason students or recent graduates are eligible for many programs.
How much will it cost?
Detailed costs are listed on each program page under the Financial Info tab. Virtual and Build Your Own Internships are in-state tuition for all students.
Are there paid internships? Most are unpaid due to visa constraints. 3 paid options: Thailand Summer TEFL/TESOL Teaching internships, Thailand Trained Teacher Internships, and paid Build Your Own internships (that you secure).
How do I pay for it? Apply for GEO scholarships. In most cases, financial aid (federal, state, institutional financial aid, scholarships, grants or loans) can be used to finance study abroad. Check with the Office of Financial Aid to review your aid package. Pell Grant recipients can apply for a Gilman Scholarship. There are $250 — $1,000 travel grants guaranteed for Build Your Own programs.
What housing options do I have? Depending on the program, you would live in apartments, dormitories, or homestays. For Build Your Own, you are responsible for finding your own housing. Argentina programs can choose their own housing if preferred.
What is the internship placement process like for partner programs? There are two rounds of acceptance: Mason and international partners. You are guaranteed an internship placement once accepted. You will interview with potential employers by video calls and receive an offer.
Do I need a visa? For travel programs, visa process details are listed for each program, since this is different for each country and your citizenship. Visas are not needed for virtual programs.
