Summer Internships

Earn 3-6 credits by completing a full-time internship. Once accepted, you are guaranteed placement by our partner organizations in an internship in your field of choice.

Application Process

Identify a program from our list here and ensure you meet its requirements.
Schedule a meeting with Kelly McNulty. If you are unsure of where to look or how to narrow down internship options, GEO staff can provide guidance as needed.
Complete the Mason application online by the due date.
Once accepted, GEO staff will advise if you need to fill out our partner’s online application too.
Our partners will connect you with companies in your field for Skype interviews to secure an internship.
Our partners will assist with housing, local tips, emergency on-call resources, etc.
You are responsible for booking your own flight once given the “green light” by GEO staff.
Submit all required paperwork to GEO staff and our partners by the deadlines shared.

Guidelines

You are guaranteed placement in an internship in your field.
Your internship will be full time (30+ hours per week) for either 4 weeks or 8-12 weeks, depending on the program.
Most summer programs are 6 credits for undergraduates completing 8-12 week internships. However, this may be 3 credits for 4 week internships or for graduate students with specific degree requirements. You complete an INTS course that is taught by Mason professors online. You will receive credits for this INTS course but other credits may be possible with department approval.
Your program may also have professional development workshops or cultural courses.
You and your supervisor will fill out evaluations to submit to our partners and you will have check ins with their staff throughout the internship.

Cost

The costs estimates are listed for each program. Flights are not included in these estimates.
There are scholarships available through GEO here.
Talk to your Financial Aid advisor as soon as possible to see how any aid or current scholarships can apply to your program. This is different for each person based on their aid details.

Guidelines

Semester long programs include taking classes alongside a part-time internship and enrolling at the partner university listed.
You are guaranteed placement in an internship in your field.
You will receive 12-15 credits for the program. This includes a 3 credit internship and either 9 or 12 credits from the courses you take at the university.
You will receive internship credits as an INTS course but other credits for this may be possible with department approval.

Winter Break Internships

Earn 1-3 credits through the Build Your Own Internship program, where you secure your own internship in your field and receive a scholarship.
