Program Details

Earn 1-6 credits for a summer or winter internship or externship that you research and secure in your field.  A 3 or 6 credit option is an internship, while a 1 or 2 credit option is considered an externship (a mini-internship).

  • Identify a country or region and 3-5 internship possibilities online.
  • Schedule a meeting with Experiential Programs Administrator, Kelly McNulty. If you are unsure of where to look or how to narrow down internship options, GEO staff can provide guidance throughout but students must lead the follow up research.
  • Complete the Mason application online by the due date, including the form which lists the 3-5 internship options. This application will be available soon but please email GoIntern@gmu.edu if you are interested now. Wait to pay the Mason administrative fee until you’ve been accepted to the internship you find.
  • If you are participating in a program where there is a US Department of State travel warning, additional paperwork and discussions may be required.
  • Apply to the internships that you researched .
  • Once you secure an internship and are given the “green light” by GEO staff, you are responsible for finalizing and purchasing the following: flights, housing, food, transportation, visa, etc.
  • Submit all required paperwork to GEO staff by the deadlines shared.
  • Travel abroad and begin your internship!
  • Students must have a 2.0 GPA to go abroad and earn credit.
  • The internship/externship will take place at an existing organization, company, or facility with an established history of work.
  • No minimum of credits required. You can earn up to a maximum of 6 credits for this internship.
  • Must provide an internship job description with a clear supervisor. A contract will be signed by you, Mason, and your employer.

6 Credit Summer Option: Internship

  • You complete an INTS course that is taught by Mason professors online, alongside students in our Mason Partner Programs. You will receive credits for this INTS course but other credits may be possible with department approval.
  • Both you and your supervisor must complete a mid-point evaluation and post-evaluation independently, which will each be sent to our GEO office.

3 Credit Winter/Summer Option: Externship

  • You complete an abbreviated course alongside students in our Mason Partner Programs. You will receive credits for this course likely through INTS but other credits may be possible with department approval.
  • Both you and your supervisor must complete a post-evaluation independently, which will each be sent to our GEO office.

1-2 Credit Winter/Summer Option: Externship

  • You will complete a webinar series along with assignments.

Both you and your supervisor must complete a post-evaluation independently, which will each be sent to our GEO office.

  • The following charges are based on the price of in-state tuition and fees, as well as GEO administrative fees.  You are responsible for making your own budget for your time abroad based on your research and discussions with your internship supervisor. The expenses below do not include flights, housing, food, transportation, etc.
  • There are scholarships available through GEO here.
  • Talk to your Financial Aid advisor as soon as possible to see how any aid or current scholarships can apply to your program. This is different for each person based on their aid details.
